This is my large-scale take on a traditional (18th c. Dutch) form --the flower brick-- that culminates several of my diverse influences: upholstery and flocked wallpaper to the paintings of Martin Johnson Heade and candy.
This piece is completely one-of-a-kind and sculptural, but in the hands of the right floral designer, would be positively divine as it is also functional. Each of the two sides is quite different. The one side features two camouflaged koi happily swimming at the bottom of the form in their swirl, deco scenery. The other is mix of precise, quilted stamping and flowing, raised swirls contrasting in bands and stripes.
I threw this piece on the potter's wheel, heavily altered the form and then topped it with an elaborate star matrix that adds to the upholstered feel of the whole, complete with small tassels. Numerous techniques were used on the surface, including stamping, slip-trailing, sprigging and slip-sponging.
